Why Do We Rush To Reach Success?

why do we rush to reach success

Before we start, success means different things for everyone. It could mean reaching a high position in the company you work for, having children, buying a house, getting good grades or having a dog. We all have these different ideas of success and no matter how much time we have to achieve these goals and dreams, it's as though we can't stop ourselves from rushing to reach this successful point in our lives. We stop enjoying the other parts of our lives in hope that we will get to /that success/ sooner. Why do we rush to reach success?

I'm guilty of this too. It's something that, by writing this post, I'm hoping to change. I'm hoping to start enjoying the smaller moments of my life more rather than thinking about the endpoints constantly; graduation, moving into my own house etc etc. It can be a difficult thing when all around us, we see people succeeding, achieving these desirable goals and as happy as we are for them, we wonder why we can't have those things too, right now.

On social media, I constantly see people who are around my age that have just bought their first house or have just started in an amazing job and I can't help but feel that I am not doing enough. However, I am doing enough. I am working at the speed of my own timeline and that is enough. I say these things but as you can imagine, it's easy to say, harder to believe.

In these moments, we forget that everyone's circumstances are different. Everyone wants different things in life. Alas, we get caught up in the moment of not feeling enough and as though we are moving too slowly. Really, there's no such thing as moving too slowly. Who gets to decide which age you graduate? Which age you move out? Which age you get your first proper job? You are the only one who can decide these things and sometimes, things are out of your control. Finding a job is hard. University is hard. So what if it takes you a little longer to decide whether or not you want to go to University, take things at your own speed.

In society today, it's common to say things like "I can't wait for this part of my life to be over", whether that is the school year or just the end of the week at work. We all know that I'm guilty of this too if you follow me on social media. However, I feel as though this can be detrimental to our mental health as instead of living, we are constantly waiting for the next thing to be over. It's like just waiting for the weekend and as soon as it's over, going back to dreading each day until it's the weekend again. It's not a great way to live. I'm learning that it's vital to find things that you enjoy in every aspect of your life in order to stop looking to what's next and just enjoying your life in the moment. I don't want to sound incredibly cliche but I just want to highlight how we are literally wishing our lives away.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think that we rush to reach success? Let me know your thoughts!
